Indices market data feed: index prices and candles

The FinaQuotes indices feed delivers leading equity indices as trackers and calculated values, each priced by a single last value and streamed in near real time during the hours of the underlying market. Every instrument has OHLC candles on nine timeframes in UTC. It is built for brokers, prop firms, trading platforms and financial websites that show market direction next to individual stocks.

What is covered

The indices set follows the leading equity indices that clients expect to see on a market overview. To be precise about what you receive: index values are delivered as trackers and calculated values that follow each index. They are not the licensed official values published by the index providers.

For most display uses, such as a ticker tape, a market overview or a chart of market direction, a tracker or calculated value does the job. If your product needs official index values under a provider licence, talk to us before you build on this class. The current list is on the instruments page.

  • Leading equity indices
  • Delivered as trackers and calculated values, not licensed official index values
  • Same symbol, tick and candle format as every other class

Quote format

Indices have no two-sided market of their own, so each tick carries a single last value. The tick structure is the same as for every other class: both price fields hold the same value, bid equals ask equals last, and the size field is zero.

Timestamps are in UTC milliseconds. The message reference and client examples are in the feed documentation.

Sessions and hours

Each index instrument streams during the hours of its underlying equity market, so values move while the stocks behind it trade and stay flat when that market is closed. A subscription outside the session returns the last known value as a snapshot.

We describe indices as near real time. Most updates reach you sub-second after we receive them, but some instruments carry the delay that applies on their exchange, and we pass it through instead of hiding it.

Candles and history

Every index instrument has OHLC candles on nine timeframes, from 1m to 1MN. The base series is one minute and higher timeframes are aggregated from it. Bars are in UTC, which keeps indices from different regions on one time axis.

Depth is years of daily history and months of intraday. See historical data and the REST reference for details.

Use cases

  • Broker: show where the market is going on the client area dashboard, next to the stocks you offer.
  • Trading platform: add an index row to a market overview and give users charts of market direction from the same API.
  • Financial website: embed an index widget such as a ticker tape or market overview; on the Free plan indices are delayed 15 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Are these official index values?

No, index values are delivered as trackers and calculated values that follow each index. They are not licensed official values from the index providers.

Are index prices real time?

Indices stream in near real time during the hours of the underlying market. Some instruments carry the delay that applies on their exchange.

Do indices have bid and ask?

No, indices are delivered as a single last value, so both sides of the tick are equal. Use it as the index level in your interface.

Why are indices delayed in the free widgets?

The Free widget plan shows exchange-traded instruments, including indices, with a 15 minute delay. Pro widgets and the data feed remove that widget delay; see pricing.
