Historical market data: OHLC candles over REST
FinaQuotes historical data is OHLC candle history for every instrument in the feed, served over a REST API. It covers nine timeframes from one minute to one month, all aligned to UTC, with years of daily history and months of intraday. Brokers, trading platforms and financial websites use it to draw charts, fill gaps after a reconnect and run calculations on their own side.
At a glance
| Timeframes | 1m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 1H, 4H, 1D, 1W, 1MN |
|---|---|
| Time zone | UTC; each bar is stamped with its open time in milliseconds |
| Daily depth | Several years of 1D history |
| Hourly depth | About 2 years of 1H history |
| 5m to 30m depth | About 60 days |
| 1m depth | Up to 180 days |
| Delivery | REST, token in a request header; see the REST reference |
| Rate limit | 120 requests per minute per IP by default, no per-request billing |
What is available
Every instrument that streams in the live feed also has candle history: stocks, forex, crypto, metals, commodities, indices and bonds. Candles are built from one-minute bars, and higher timeframes are aggregated from them, so the bars on different timeframes agree with each other.
The depth depends on the timeframe. In short: years of daily history, months of intraday. The figures in the table above are approximate and can differ between instruments, for example for a symbol that was added to the feed recently.
Request and response format
History is served by the candles endpoint of the REST API, /api/v1/candles. A request names a symbol, a timeframe and, optionally, a time range and a number of bars. The response is JSON: the symbol, the timeframe and a list of bars, each with an open time in UTC milliseconds and the open, high, low and close prices.
Parameters, limits, error codes and examples in curl and Python are in the REST reference. The same API serves the instrument catalog, so you can list symbols and then request history for each one. Live prices come from the WebSocket feed, not from REST.
Sessions, gaps and corrections
Candles follow the trading hours of each market, so some gaps are expected and correct:
- Stock candles exist only for the trading hours of the listing exchange, with daylight saving taken into account. There are no bars for nights, weekends or exchange holidays.
- Forex and spot metals have no bars at the weekend; crypto trades 24/7 and has a continuous series.
- Commodities, indices and bonds follow the hours of their underlying markets.
- Recent bars can be corrected after the fact when a source revises a price. If you store history, refresh the latest bars from time to time instead of treating them as final.
Use cases
- Charts: draw a candle chart for any symbol and timeframe, then keep the last bar moving with live ticks from the feed.
- Indicators on your side: compute moving averages, ranges or any other studies from the bars in your own code. The API returns prices, not computed indicators.
- Backtests within the available depth: test a strategy on daily bars over several years, or on intraday bars over recent months.
What this is not
Historical data at FinaQuotes is candle history over an API. It is not a tick-level archive: individual ticks are streamed live but not stored for download. There are no bulk file exports either; history is requested per symbol and timeframe. If your project needs deeper history than listed here, tell us in the access request and we will say honestly whether it is possible.
Frequently asked questions
How far back does the history go?
Daily candles go back several years. Hourly history covers about 2 years, 5m to 30m about 60 days, and 1m up to 180 days.
What time zone are the candles in?
All candles are in UTC. Each bar carries its open time in milliseconds since the Unix epoch, so you can convert it to any local time.
Can I download tick history?
No, history is provided as OHLC candles, with one minute as the finest timeframe. Individual ticks are available only as a live stream over WebSocket.
Why are there gaps in stock candles?
Stock candles are built only for the trading hours of the listing exchange. Nights, weekends and exchange holidays have no bars by design.
